- ItemA feasibility study of a mental health mobile app in the Dominican Republic: the untold story(2018) Angelina Sosa Lovera; Patricia ReynaMobile health (mHealth) interventions include mental health apps (MHapps). There are hundreds of MHapps, which have been touted as a means of revolutionizing mental health care delivery. In spite of the rosy outlook and promise of MHapps, there are challenges to implementation in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs). We report on several domains of implementation: acceptance, appropriateness, engagement, and work processes assessed in two samples of clinicians and patients designed to develop and test the feasibility of a Spanish language Cognitive Behavioral VoiceThread® app for Dominican primary care patients with depression. Results indicated that feasibility of our eMH intervention was compromised by appropriateness of the target audience and the eligibility criteria used, including language, age, access to phones, and access to the internet. Both participants and clinical providers had varying degrees of engagement in the MHapp. Clinical providers had a desire for increased knowledge and capacity building, but also unspoken expectations and misaligned incentives. For participants, there were logistical and emotional barriers to use, some of which could not be fully determined in this study due to a lack of feasibility in terms of a low retention rate. Corresponding to these issues, we identified four potential solutions: 1) understanding of characteristics of end-users; 2) engagement of key stakeholders; 3) working within the existing infrastructure; and 4) addressing the social determinants of health. Unforeseen strengths also emerged as a result of our investigations. The challenges encountered in this pilot study can be viewed as evidence of failure or part of the incremental steps necessary to build future success.
- ItemA Follow-Up Study of a Reminiscence Intervention and Its Effects on Depressed Mood, Life Satisfaction, and Well-Being in the Elderly.(2017) Flor Berenice FortunaThe purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which a reminiscence intervention reduces depressed mood and improves life satisfaction and psychological well-being. 160 healthy elderly people participated in a 10-session intervention. An experimental design with pretest and posttest evaluations was applied, comparing a control group to an intervention group to evaluate the effects of the program. Follow-up measures were also taken to find out whether the intervention's positive effects lasted over time. Mixed Model ANOVAs showed significant increases in the time-group interaction, life satisfaction, and psychological well-being measures, and decreases in depressed mood, after treatment. The effects remained after three months in the case of life satisfaction and some dimensions of psychological well-being,but they were lower on depressed mood. This study provides additional support for the effectiveness of a reminiscence program as a useful intervention to improve the quality of life of older adults.
- ItemA Jacobi–spectral framework for the heat equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions(2026-03-09) Juan Toribio Milane; José A. Gómez Hernández; Juan R. Holguín; Pedro N. Tifa de JesúsWe developed a Jacobi–spectral framework for the heat equation in a spherical domain under axial symmetry and Dirichlet boundary conditions. The angular part of the Laplacian was realized as a Jacobi Sturm–Liouville operator on a weighted space, enabling the Jacobi transform to diagonalize the angular component and project the partial diferential equation (PDE) onto a sequence of decoupled radial problems. Each projected equation reduced to a Euler-type radial ordinary diferential equation (ODE) driven by the corresponding Jacobi coefficient of the source term. These modal equations were solved in terms of spherical-Bessel eigenfunctions and radial Green kernels, yielding explicit Duhamel-type formulas for the time-dependent coefficients and establishing convergence in the weighted space. The Legendre case recovered the classical axisymmetric model, while general Jacobi parameters provided a unified extension of this setting. A central result was the demonstration of a rigorous equivalence between the Jacobi–spectral representation and the classical separation-of-variables solution written in spherical harmonics and spherical-Bessel modes. The proposed framework clarified the angular–radial coupling in spherical geometries and connected naturally with modern Jacobi and ultraspherical spectral methods.
- ItemA look at generalized degenerate Bernoulli and Euler matrices(2023-06-16) Juan HernándezIn this paper, we consider the generalized degenerate Bernoulli/Euler polynomial matrices and study some algebraic properties for them. In particular, we focus our attention on some matrix-inversion formulae involving these matrices. Furthermore, we provide analytic properties for the so-called generalized degenerate Pascal matrix of the first kind, and some factorizations for the generalized degenerate Euler polynomial matrix.
- ItemA Mobile App to prevent depression among low-income primary care patients in the Dominican Republic: sociocultural adaptations(2020) Angelina Sosa LoveraIntroduction: Mental health mobile apps (MHapps) can provide depression treatment to people worldwide who do not have access to care, but few apps are culturally targeted to the population. In this series of studies, we described sociocultural considerations of MHapp development, and we explored participants’ perceptions of acceptability, usability, and cultural relevance of the MHapp. Method: Individual interviews were conducted in three separate primary care sites in the Dominican Republic among convenience samples of staff and patients (n = 23, 18, and 21, respectively), using mixed methods of data collection. Results: Modifications were made during the iterative design process to reflect user preferences, which included a female gendered voice, the addition of animations, and changes to the psychoeducational content. Discussion: Primary care patients reported strong interest in MHapps due to its convenience, privacy, and affordability. Our findings support the necessity of detailed examination of user preferences to develop culturally congruent MHapp psychoeducation.
- ItemA new species of Petaloclaudius sublette & Wirth, 1972 (Diptera, chironomidae, Orthocladiinae) from the Dominican Republic, with an emended generic diagnosis(2024-03-20) Ruth BastardoPetalocladius dominiensis Andersen & Baranov sp. n. is described and figured based on an adult male collected in the Ebano Verde Scientific Reserve in the Dominican Republic. The new species can be separated from its only congener, P. setosus Sublette & Wirth, 1972 from Jamaica, as it is slightly smaller with about 115 dorsocentrals compared to 56 in P. setosus. The inferior volsella is broadly subtriangular, while more lingulate in P. setosus, and the gonostylus has a small, but distinct megaseta and a subapical brush of spine-like seta, which apparently lack in P. setosus. The generic diagnosis is emended including the new species, and the systematic position is briefly discussed.
- ItemA qualitative assessment of alternative eradication strategies for African swine fever in the Dominican Republic(2022-11-16) Raysa ReyesSince its recent detection in July 2021, the reintroduction of African swine fever (ASF) in the Dominican Republic (DR) has generated much discourse on various measures for its effective control. Strategies range from complete depopulation of the swine population, as was done in 1978, to a system of passive surveillance with endemicity, with many in-between. Currently, ASF-decision makers need a peer evaluation and comparison and contrast of these potential strategies that incorporates both private and public perspectives. To achieve this, we used strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis to evaluate three different theoretical ASF control scenarios with the aim of contributing evaluations of alternatives strategies to mitigate the epidemic's impact. These included total depopulation of all pigs in the DR, partial depopulation, and continuation of current control measures. Relevant experts from the DR private swine industry were identified through “snowball sampling” techniques. Five experts completed the SWOT questionnaire and additional questions considering aspects of financial cost, social impact, feasibility, animal welfare, and regional policy. The summarized responses were presented to the full group of experts initially nominated for final review and later to representatives of the DR government. The SWOT analysis highlighted that although there are certain benefits associated with each of the proposed strategies, there are also important drawbacks and disadvantages for all. This analysis is a tool for facilitating cooperating between the private-public industries, and ultimately it supports the development of strategies that will reduce ASF burden in the DR in a way suitable for all relevant stakeholders.

- ItemA randomized open-label clinical trial to evaluate convalescent plasma compared to conventional standard care management for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) in hospitalized patients in the Dominican Republic(2022) Ángel Díaz BeltréAims: The potential benefit of blood therapy in the pandemic is an opportunity for breakthrough therapy. Still, it is also a test for countries to understand their blood supply system and its regulatory infrastructure to succeed in a potentially life-saving alternative for emergent pandemics. Methods: A multicenter, randomized, zero-phase exploratory study is to compare the efficacy and safety of Convalescent Plasma (CP, test group) with standard care therapy (control group) in hospitalized patients for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). Results: Thirty-five patients were randomized; 18 (51.4%) corresponded to the treated group. There was a clinical improvement over time for both groups (p < 0.001), but CP didn’t show a significantly different result than standard treatment for non-critically ill patients infected with COVID-19 in the Dominican Republic (p = 0.058). The appearance of dyspnea, the increase of >50% of pulmonary infiltrates between 24 and 48 hours of evolution, and positive qualitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results improved significantly in the control group. Therefore, convalescent therapy presented a significant recovery in these signs and symptoms. No adverse events were reported. Conclusion: This prospective study serves as a pilot to propose an investigation with a representative sample to evaluate the benefits of this therapy’s effects in a bigger population. The most significant advantage of Convalescent Plasma (CP) therapy was obtained in the first six days, where the improvement in clinical categorization was faster, suggesting CP is best for early and mild cases of COVID-19. Actions for enrolling volunteers for this study were not productive, an opportunity for the Dominican Republic health authorities to improve their blood donation strategies and support blood availability

- ItemAmbient noise tomography images accreted terranes and igneous provinces in Hispaniola and Puerto Rico.(2018-11-15) Eugenio Polanco RiveraThe North American-Caribbean plate boundary near the islands of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico is a complex region in which strain is accommodated by different modes of deformation. In 2013, 16 broadband stations were deployed in the Dominican Republic to densify the local permanent network. One goal is to combine their data with those from permanent networks in the Caribbean to develop a better understanding of the crust and upper mantle structure in the Greater Antilles. Here we use the records of 204 stations spanning almost 7 years of data to obtain group velocity maps. We observe at short periods the contacts between accreted terranes and the igneous provinces of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, at longer periods the collisional boundary between the buoyant Bahamas Carbonate Platform and Hispaniola, and the transition from Hispaniola's accreted terranes to the faster lithosphere of the Venezuelan Basin and Cayman Trough.
