dc.description.abstractThe study of soils to assess their condition and potential use is an internationally established practice. The greatest interest corresponds to agricultural soils and their heavy metal content, given their impact. The study of soils to assess their condition and potential use is an internationally established practice. The greatest interest corresponds to agricultural soils and their heavy metal content, given their impact on food production. The presence of heavy metals in the soil can alter the sustainability of the food chain, causing potential risks to human and animal health. The objective of this study was to systematize the information available in the last ten years on studies of heavy metal contamination in the agricultural soils of the countries of the Insular Caribbean. A search was conducted in the Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases for the period 2012-2021. The different sources of heavy metal contamination of agricultural soils, its effects on the soil, on plants and on human and animal health, the contamination rates and the experiences of studies of heavy metal contamination in agricultural soils of the countries of the Insular Caribbean were examined, resulting in very few and little information on the reference values of heavy metals in agricultural soils.
